CAPE GEM DONATES TO CAPE TOWN WEAVERS

Cape Gem will donate up to £2000 from the sale of its handcrafted bags back to the South African weavers who make them this summer, the firm said today.

Cape Gem will give back 10% of its online sales from www.capegem.co.uk in June and July - an estimated £2000 - to help the fifty weavers and their families through the slower months of business during Cape Town’s winter.

The weavers work for Mielie - a not for profit business which sells its fashion and homeware goods exclusively online through Cape Gem in the UK. The extra funds will be used on projects such as building an organic vegetable garden, and providing play and learning equipment for a pre-school nursery.

Praise for Mielie handbags from Costume Designer for
High School Musical 3; Senior Year – Caroline B. Marx

Caroline B. Marx first became aware of Mielie bags in Studio DNA Salon in LA where they were on display;

“ I chose the Mielie handbags and jewellery for several reasons: I like to use recyclable/sustainable products as much as I can both in my work and private life and I believe in supporting free trade. This is also why Corbin Blue's character "Chad" has "Eco" messages on his organic T's and he wears primarily organic and sustainable costumes throughout the film which even include his jeans, socks, sneakers and Mielie wooden bracelets...>>> more

Mielie - Origins and Ethos

Mielie, founded by Adri Schütz in 2002, produces a range of contemporary handbags, accessories, home ware products and clothing. Wherever possible, recycled materials are used and, given the choice, the team always try to make things by hand, thereby creating as many jobs as they can.

Whilst working as a freelance graphic designer, Adri chanced upon some hooked rug carpets that were made by weavers from Epilepsy South Africa and was immediately smitten by the technique – it is very tactile, colourful and there are very few design restrictions. So convinced was she that she could create a market if she designed a range of products that used this technique, she established the Mielie business initially producing smaller items like handbags and cushions as the process of weaving is so time ...>>>more
